Nakamura who has a reputation as an amazingly fast blit player was to take first place at the Cap d'Agde tournament.
The event was a closed rapid chess tournament in two groups, with the winners playing in quarter-finals, semi-finals and then finals. Nakamura defeated Karpov in the semi's and Ivanchuk in the Finals.
